Dogs in a Blanket

Not quite a corn dog, but this cheesy-mustard flavored crust is almost there. If you are lucky, track down hot dogs from a local butcher or use your preferred all-beef dogs without a lots of extras in them. Alternatively, if you are a tofu or turkey dog fan they will taste great all wrapped up in this biscuit dough. We used white flour, since this meal was a treat, so I cannot guarantee the flavor/texture if you use gluten-free or whole wheat flour instead, but I would be willing to try if I were you.

Ingredients

  • cup flour, your preferred blend
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon cheddar cheese, shredded, optional
  • 1 tablespoon butter, unsalted, or olive oil
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 3 hot dogs

Serving Size: 3 People

Preparation Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375.

Whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and shredded cheese. Mash in the butter or olive oil. Beat the egg, milk and mustard. Fold the flour mixture with the eggs & milk, kneading slightly until a loose, wet dough is formed.

Throw it on a lightly floured cutting board and roll out to about 1/2 inch thick.

Place a hot dog down on the dough, cut a piece just a bit larger than it and wrap the dough around the hot dog. The dough is forgiving, just tuck & pinch it adding dough pieces as necessary until the hot dog is completely sealed.

Repeat this with the remaining hot dogs.

Place seal side down on a baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes. Flip over and continue to bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the dough is slightly golden, feels baked through with a slight crunch on the outside.

Serve with your favorite hot dog toppings to dip.
