from Grilled Mango-Curry Chicken with Beet Raita & Dal, the Week of September 16, 2012.
View the next recipe for this meal.

The popular Indian chef Madhur Jaffrey states that dal simply means split beans. Therefore there are endless variations of dal. This is a rather simple recipe with a touch of garam masala curry. If you cannot find a curry blend, make your own with a medley of cumin, mustard, coriander to taste.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup lentil
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala, add more to taste
  • ½ teaspoon mustard, optional
  • ½ teaspoon coriander, ground, optional
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Serving Size: 4 People

Preparation Instructions

Bring the lentils and water up to a boil. Reduce to medium-low, add the garlic and simmer for about 30-45 minutes until the lentils are tender.

In the final 10-15 minutes of cooking, stir in the spices and salt.
