The Food
Today marks the first day of a huge 7-day event that I have had the honor to coordinate: Tucson Food Week. While I realize most of you are spread throughout the country, Food Day is a celebration each of us can take part of. Go to FoodDay.org to find an event in your community or join the 10-day Food Day challenge which includes a chance to win a year long subscription to Lilly’s Table.
In addition to some exciting food loving activities, this week is clearly a time to dive head first into the Harvest with Caramelized Onion, Apple & Hazelnut Salad, Harvest Empanadas, Pumpkin & Roasted Bell Pepper Pasta, and Parmesan Walnut Mushrooms. Snack or lunch on Pecan Crackers and Chipotle Goat Cheese. Breakfast is also all about the harvest with the Poached Pears with Spiced Ricotta and Chili Relleno Scramble.
In my hometown, we are focused on native and heritage foods including Tepary Beans. Feel blessed if you can get your hands on these drought resistant beans locally, but you can also try buying them through here. Pair them with a simple Pico de Gallo and a Carrot Baked Rice that will give you nutritious comfort food for a few days.
While Octoberfest is technically a September celebration in Germany, we seem to ignore that here in the US to celebrate throughout October instead. If you have yet to drink a German beer or sausage, try this Braised Cabbage, Apples & Beer Brats with Skillet Potatoes.
As a final twist, try the Ginger-Coconut Calamari and Lemon-Ginger Cauliflower with the Coconut Creamed Chard and Coconut Rice.
Don’t forget to celebrate Food Day whether you are able to attend an event, take the challenge or just spend the week focused on eating real, delicious food.
Cook seasonally. Eat consciously. Live well,
