When you make your own from roasted canned tomatoes you can control the amount of salt, sugar and preservatives- not to mention the flavor.
This simple recipe can be elaborated upon by adding your favorite spices, herbs and flavors.

Ingredients

  • 1 onion, small, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 can roasted crushed tomatoes
  • 1 pinch salt, or more to taste
  • 1 pinch red pepper flakes, optional, or more to taste
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced or pressed
  • 1 teaspoon dried italian herbs, or 2 tablespoons fresh herbs

Serving Size: 2 People

Preparation Instructions

Place a saucepan over medium heat. Add the onions. When they start to stick add the olive oil. Shake the pan and toss with a wooden spoon for about 5-8 minutes until they are tender and starting to turn golden in color.

Add in the crushed tomatoes and juice. Bring up to a simmer and season with the remaining ingredients. Add a pinch of salt, red chili flakes, minced garlic and dried or fresh herbs.

Simmer for at least 5-10 minutes until the flavors meld.
