Asian Plum Barbecue Sauce

from Asian Plum Lettuce Wraps with Red Chili Green Beans, the Week of October 2, 2016.
View the previous or next recipe for this meal.

Plum sauce is a common Chinese sweet & sour condiment. This version uses fresh plums and a minimal amount of ingredients to create a slightly similar barbecue sauce. Adjust the seasonings to your personal taste. If you like more mild cuisine, start with just a pinch of the jalapeno and ginger, adding more to taste. If you like it extra spicy, red chili paste would blend in nicely. If your plums are oozing with sweetness you may be able to omit the honey.

Ingredients

  • 3 plums, pits removed, roughly chop
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce, wheat-free tamari for gluten-free
  • tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, finely minced
  • 1 clove garlic, roughly chop
  • 1 jalapeno, roughly chop
  • 1 tablespoon honey, more or less to taste

Serving Size: 2 People

Preparation Instructions

Place the plums, soy sauce, vinegar, ginger, garlic, and half of the jalapeno in a blender. Whirl it up until smooth. Taste. Add more jalapeno as desired. Blend.

Pour into a saucepan, bring up to a simmer for about 5-10 minutes, until the sauce is thick. Stir in the honey to taste.

Serve hot or cold.
