The Food

Week of December 25, 2011

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

New Years is full of superstitious and delicious ingredients destine to give good fortune throughout the year.

Dark leafy greens look like folded money and every bite will increase ones fortune. Conveniently, greens are quite prevalent this time of year. Try the Wilted Collard Greens, Chopped Kale & Pomegranate Salad, Citrus, Avocado & Fennel Salad and Turnip Green Dip. There are greens tucked into the Winter Squash Lasagna and the Braised Cabbage, Apples & Brats.

Beans symbolize abundance and money because of their coin like appearance. Try the Southern tradition of Black-Eyed Peas (vegan or with ham) and the Poor Man’s Beluga Caviar. With all of these fortune filled meals you will eat this week, next year you can enjoy the expensive caviar instead.

Pork is another customary dish since the pig symbolizes progress as it roots itself in the ground and pushes forward. The rich fat content also signifies wealth and prosperity. So eat it up with Spanish Ham, Manchego and Marmalade Sandwiches and the Braised Cabbage, Apples & Brats.

Fish symbolizes abundance, as they so often swim in schools. Blood Orange Fish is a simply prepared fish drizzled with a ruby red sauce.

Homemade Fennel Crackers with a Hazelnut-Squash Dip are another seasonal appetizer worthy of love during these final holiday days.

For breakfast, try a Sweet Potato Bread Pudding (also a lovely dessert with a dollop of sweet whip cream) or Runny Eggs on Willted Greens.

With all of these prosperous foods, I wish you good fortune, abundance and many more delicious feasts in the New Year!

Cook seasonally. Eat consciously. Live well,

Chef Lilly
