Winter

Apple Saute

Apples are sweetest and crispiest in autumn, but they store well into the summer and therefore you will see them available throughout the winter into spring. Because they are not quite as farm-fresh in the winter, we prefer chopping them up and cooking them. We also leave the skin on since this is the source of the greatest fiber and nutrients, but that of course is optional.

Ingredients

  • 1 apple, washed and dried
  • 1 tablespoon butter, unsalted, or olive oil
  • ½ cup apple juice, or water
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup, or agave nectar, optional if needed
  • 1 pinch salt

Serving Size: 2 People



 

Preparation Instructions

Roughly chop and slice the apples in small pieces. Heat a pan over medium heat, add in the butter. Once it is melted, toss in the apple pieces. Saute lightly for 3-5 minutes until the apples start to get a little brown and golden color.

Pour in half of the apple juice or water. Increase the heat to medium-high, simmer for 5-10 minutes until the apples are softened. Add more liquid as needed.

Sweeten the apples to taste with the maple syrup or agave nectar. Fold in a pinch of salt to enhance the flavor.
