The Food

Week of September 7, 2014

Maybe you are considering saying good-bye to summer? Maybe you are sad to see it go? Regardless, stay with me here. We have just a couple of weeks left to celebrate all that makes summer exactly what it delightfully is. And September summer is a special time indeed.

Let’s start with one of my favorite September fruit. Italian Prune Plums are one of my favorites as the tree I grew up with thankfully still stands although it is currently overwhelmed weighted heavy with fruit. So, let’s eat some! My family’s favorite way to enjoy them is as the German coffee cake: Sugar Plum Kuchen. After that has been created, take any bumped and bruised plums and blend them with a handful of ingredients to create this Asian Plum Sauce which is perfect for the Asian Plum Sliders and the Asian Vegan Sliders. Mix and match them with the Grilled Sweet Potato Fries and the Red Chili Greens Beans.

Another beloved end of summer fruit are figs. They do an excellent job fancy-ing up the Fig & Sweet Potato Quinoa. Pair it with even more fig-gy goodness with the Balsamic Beet & Fig Salad for dinner with French bread.

If you have been growing basil, chances are by the end of summer you may have a big ol’ bush now. Blend it into goodness. Smear it on and call it Pesto Salmon. It goes well on the grill, especially paired with the Parmesan Grilled Eggplant and Zucchini Marinated Salad. Extra pesto can be tossed with tofu in the Pesto Tofu Scramble for a simple, yet extravagant breakfast.

Speaking of Zucchini Marinated Salad, add a bit of cheese and your favorite Italian meats and it will become the Zucchini Antipasto Salad. Pair it with Grilled Herb Bread for an easy evening dinner. The next day, leftovers are perfect for taking on the go.

Cook seasonally. Eat consciously. Celebrate food,

Chef Lilly
