The Food

Week of January 4, 2015

As the year renews, may what we cook, serve and share also reflect the simple goodness & nourishment we crave. Cleanses and detoxes are common to hear about in January, but letting go of foods that do not serve us and eating plenty of the good stuff is most critical to me.

Smoothies are all the rage this time of year. I completely support your desire to blend your vitamins into goodness, especially in my favorite Kale Smoothie (use your fave frozen fruit). But, since the weather is on the cooler side, I would encourage you to pair any smoothies with a warmer dish and one with protein, too, such as this Vegan Scramble.

Personally, I prefer to blend hot soups instead of smoothies, such as the Roasted Cauliflower Soup paired with a Kale Caesar & Polenta Croutons. I encourage you to start with a simple broth, made with bones or vegan, then cook your favorite vegetables and puree it into slurp-able goodness.

The holiday gluttony is over. It is time to listen our bodies craving for vegetables, nuts & seeds. Big salads such as the Spinach Salad with Avocado, Pear & Almonds fit the bill especially when buddied up with a warm bowl of Jewel Quinoa.

Beets are one of the best detoxing foods that can be cooked and savored in this transition to the new year. Try the Beet Hummus paired with Almond-Herb Crackers and Crudite Veggies for a simple, detoxifying lunch.

My favorite vegan Beets & Seeds Burgers are simple to whirl up in a food processor also. Dollop on the Avocado-Tahini Sauce to add another layer of flavor. Make extra sauce to start your mornings with a smear of it across an Egg Sandwich with Spinach.

A hunk of great fish, whether flounder or the most glorious fish of the day you can find, is sprinkled with the power spice turmeric to create the Turmeric-Mirin Flounder with Brown Rice Salad.

Finally, for the animal-protein lovers, try this Broccoli-Orange Beef Stir-Fry with the most interesting oranges and citrus you can find (tangerines, blood oranges, maybe?) and pile it up on steamy bowls of Brown Rice.

Whether you are easing into a new year of nourishing foods or you are simply getting rid of the sugar & starch from the holidays, let me toast to your health! May it be nourishing and delightful!

Cook seasonally. Eat consciously. Live well,

Chef Lilly
