The Food

Week of December 28, 2014

I love the way the food traditions around New Years are based on all of the superstitious possibilities for the upcoming year.

During this time of resolutions, dark leafy greens represent dollar bills and eating as many as possible will guarantee a year with pockets full. Isn’t it convenient that so many greens are also in season? Salads are an easy way to enjoy them such as in the Gruyere Apple Salad, Apple, Fennel & Blue Cheese Salad or the Citrus, Avocado, & Fennel Salad. Also, try them cooked in the Mascarpone Greens or softened Collards accompanied by the traditional Black-Eyed Peas.

Have you ever wondered why Black-Eyed Peas are a tradition? Peas or beans symbolize coins for the New Year. Other possibilities to fill your ‘coin purse’ is to indulge in the multitude of French Lentils or puree them into the Lentil Pate to serve with Fennel Crackers.

To continue the superstitious ways to ring in 2015, consider that pigs root forward and therefore your year will push forward with possibilities when you consume their goodness. Slices of ham are tucked into the Spanish Squash Biscuit Sandwiches and Sausage is just lovely served with French Lentils & Mascarpone Creamed Greens. Also, enjoy a breakfast of Mascarpone Creamed Greens with Ham & Eggs during New Years week and you will enjoy not only ‘rooting forward’, but filling your pockets with dollars. ;-)

Want some abundance? Eat a Whole Roasted Trout as fish swim in bountiful schools. Pair it with Fennel Scalloped Potatoes just because it tastes delicious, too.

While not a historically established New Years superstition, I enjoy dipping and sharing a big pot of Fondue as I share in the possibilities of love and community.

The Squash Tortilla Soup is another way to promote the spirit of community in the upcoming year. Make a big pot, invite many folks over and then create a buffet of your favorite Mexican Toppings including a Feta Guacamole. Next, grill up as many Caramelized Onion Quesadillas as you like to dip along with the soup.

As the big ball drops, enjoy the sweetness of a Seeduction Granola Drop. They are lovely for breakfast, snacks and a post-New Years resolution work out treat.

Cheers to your New Year! May we share it together and may it be full of love, deliciousness, possibilities and everything your heart desires!

Cook seasonally. Eat consciously. Live well,

Chef Lilly
