California Cheeseburgers

I always chuckle when “California” is used as an adjective for food. Often this means adding avocado other times it is simply “lettuce & tomato”. Really? Those items are not enjoyed in other parts of the world? But here I go, using it as an adjective. Feel free to substitute what California-style means to you, for me it includes avocados, tomatoes, lettuce, and sometimes watercress, sprouts or even sunflower seeds. Explore the possibilities you consider coming from the sunny state.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces ground beef
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 pinch black pepper, to taste
  • 2 slices provolone
  • 2 whole wheat buns
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 2 slices tomato
  • 4 leaves lettuce
  • 1 avocado, cut in slices

Serving Size: 2 People

Preparation Instructions

Heat the grill to medium-high.

Shape into patties and season each side generously with salt & pepper. Place on the grill for 6-10 minutes depending on the thickness of the meat and how well done you enjoy it. Flip it over. On the second side top with the cheese immediately and continue to grill for 4-8 minutes until char marks appear and the cheese is melted.

If you like your buns toasty, place them on the grill briefly until golden. Decorate and top the burgers as you please with any or all of the toppings.

A few grilling tips…
Avoid pressing the burgers, this only presses out the juices. Flip only once when the char marks appear and the burger can easily loosen from the grill.
