The Food
Happy Chinese New Year! My favorite part of this holiday is how the celebration revolves around food superstitions. Which I am nearly as excited about as I am about eating seasonally.
Given it is the year of the Rooster- let’s start with chicken. The sticky Asian Chicken Wings can be made as spicy or sweet as you like and they pair nicely with the Long Noodle Stir Fry. The long noodles represent a long life, so twirl them up with a Chinese Whole Fish that represents a whole life as well.
Of course, building community around a Chinese Hot Pot is one of the most beautiful ways to hold a lunar new year party. Get creative and make it a vegan affair with veggies and tofu, or have fun with the traditional slivers of meat or even pieces of fish dipped into the steamy flavorful Ginger-Garlic Broth table side.
For more prosperity this rooster year, simmer up the Chinese Tea Eggs and serve with a bowl of Bok Choy Slaw both travel well for lunch on the go, or enjoy the savory eggs in the morning with a dish of Winter Fruit Salad. Another breakfast is a simple Chinese Omelette that arranges simple veggies into a thin egg omelette wrap.
As the color red is intended to ward off bad luck in Chinese tradition, whip it into this dish of Beet Fried Rice. Serve it with the Sesame Tofu for a complete meal.
In addition to the lunar parties, football fans across the US are gearing up for their biggest day of the year. Mix feta with avocados to take your traditional Super Bowl appetizer to a new level with the Feta-Guacamole, Black Bean Dip and Homemade Chips. These toppings can be mixed and matched for a Baked Potato Bar with Chili + Squash Nacho Cheese Dip, too.
Happy Year of the Rooster!
