The Food

Week of February 15, 2015

There are two fabulous food events this week: Mardi Gras is coming to us on Tuesday the 17th and Chinese New Year arrives on the 19th. So, prepare your shopping list and get ready to celebrate.

Starting with Shrove Tuesday aka Pancake Day (aka ahem Mardi Gras!) make the best pancakes: crepes!
Sprinkle them as we do in our home with a dusting of sugar and squirt of lemon. Make a huge batch and serve the pancakes for dinner as well stuffed with a creamy spinach filling. For any Catholics out there, you could even serve these on fish Fridays smothered with this Smoked Salmon Sauce.

To encompass the New Orleans element of the holiday, try this easy Vegan Dirty Rice with Black Eyed Peas & Wilted Greens.

One of my favorite parts about Chinese New Year is how the dishes are all about promoting goodness, abundance, longevity and more. So this year get ready for some simple Chinese dishes that represent so much more.

When you gather around a Chinese Hot Pot, you are promoting good relationships and family in the coming year. It is even easier to make than it sounds as your dinner buddies do all the fun cooking table side.

The plethora of tiny flowers on broccoli or cauliflower promotes a year of blossoming and riches. Enjoy the Broccoli Orange Beef tossed across Long Noodles which increase longevity. You can also pair the long noodles with a stir-fry of Garlic Bok Choy and Whole Fish that will grant you abundance in the coming year.

For lunch, take a warm bowl of Egg Drop Soup made with the extra Ginger-Garlic Broth and serve it with a simple Ginger Vinaigrette Salad. The traditional Chinese Tea Eggs are fun to make and can be taken for lunch with the Bok Choy Slaw or enjoy them for breakfast with a simple bowl of Winter Fruit.

Whether you normally celebrate both holidays or not, take the time this week to enjoy the possibilities of both traditions through the magic of delicious food!

Cook seasonally. Eat consciously. Live well,

Chef Lilly
