The Food

Week of December 29, 2013

Happy, bright & beautiful New Year to you and your family!

I love all of the traditions and superstitions that put us on the path for a fabulous New Year.

Dark leafy greens are cherished this time of year, not only because they can grow in colder months, but because they look like dollar bills. Try the Roasted Beet, Blue & Kale Salad, Cooked Collards, Mascarpone Creamed Greens, and Apple, Fennel & Blue Cheese Salad.

Meanwhile, beans look like small coins and their seemingly uncountable quantity will guarantee with pockets full of change. Tiny French Lentils are a perfect companion for any of the greens above. The Black-Eyed Peas are of course best friends with the Collards, but I give you permission to deviate.

Another belief is to consume pork, since the pig roots forward. This will guarantee your ability to move forward in the coming year. The easiest option is sausage which compliments lentils so nicely, but slices of ham for lunch with the Spanish Squash Biscuits or breakfast a breakfast of Ham, Mascarpone Creamed Greens and Eggs will also do the trick.

Despite all of the superstitions, my childhood memory of New Year’s Eve was more a celebration of appetizers such as the Butternut Goat Cheese Spread or Lentil Pate (remember, beans = pockets full of change!) with Fennel Crackers.

I also have memories of Chinese take-out years, which are also fun to simply make at home. Try Crab Wontons, which can be made mostly ahead and then stir-fry up Daikon & Cabbage.

Finally, celebrate that final ball drop with these sweet, kiss you on New Years treats for breakfast, snack or simple dessert: Seeduction Granola Drops.

As you transition from 2013 and into the new, this week enjoy the superstitions and traditions that wrap around this season.

Cook seasonally. Eat consciously. Live well,

Chef Lilly
