The Food

Week of February 7, 2016

We have a busy week, friend. Chinese New Year starts on Monday, Mardi Gras is on Tuesday, not to mention the Super Bowl on Sunday, but you will have to check out last week’s meal plan for game day ideas about that one.

My favorite part of Chinese New Year are the connections made between the food and the hope for the coming year. To start, swirl up the longest, uncut Sesame Noodles you can to signify a long life. Serve it with a Chinese Whole Fish to represent an abundant surplus in the coming year, the Garlic Bok Choy is there to round out the meal.

Extra raw bok choy is lovely in a simple slaw paired with the Chinese Tea Eggs for a lunch on the go.

The Chinese Hot Pot is a communal dish that signifies the gathering of family. Enjoy it with the Ginger-Garlic Broth.

Whether you are celebrating Chinese New Years or Sunday’s Super Bowl the Spicy Asian Chicken Wings are fun as an appetizer or cold on the go packed in a lunch with the Orange + Roasted Chili Salad.

Since it is the year of the monkey, this is a bit silly, but I figured Banana Nut Cookies and Banana Nut Smoothies would be a playful way to toast the monkeys this year.

For Mardi Gras, celebrate it NOLA style with Cajun Chicken, Dirty Rice Pilaf and Greens or make your meal vegan with Black-Eyed Peas instead of the chicken.

In other parts of the world, Mardi Gras is also considered pancake day and crepe-like pancakes are prepared as a way to use up excess butter, flour and eggs that will not be eaten during the Lenten season. Try the Crepes simply with Lemon + Powdered Sugar for breakfast. Then double or triple the batch to make these Spinach Stuffed Crepes for dinner.

No matter the celebration you have this week, may it be delicious and beautiful!

Cook seasonally. Eat consciously. Live well,

Chef Lilly
